What is a Habitat?

A habitat is where animals and plants live. For a certain place to be called a habitat, several things must be present. First, it must have food and water for plants and animals. Animals need places to hide from enemies and to stay safe from bad weather, too. A habitat supplies places where an animal can build its home, such as a nest or a den. Animals must also be able to reproduce and raise their young in a habitat. Many habitats are natural, such as forests and lakes. Some habitats are made by people. Parks, gardens, and towns are human-made habitats. Some common habitats are oceans, deserts, forests, grasslands, wetlands, and tundras.

A forest is a good habitat for many birds to raise a family. It supplies food and trees, in which birds can build nests to keep their babies safe.
